How To Plan The Landscaping Of Your Garden

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

Landscaping techniques allow the gardener to transform a simple backyard into a lovely garden. There are many routes to having a stunning garden, because there are many types to select from and there are different tastes too. Each to his own. Some styles of garden require a great deal of looking after and others less so, but even a slabbed or concrete backyard requires some looking after.

The best method of going about making something beautiful out of your backyard is planning and perhaps the simplest way of planning is to produce a plan or a drawing of your garden.

If you choose this route, the first thing you will need to do is get some graph paper and plot the exact size and form of your garden onto it, with as large a scale as will fit on the sheet of graph paper.

After you have done that, put in in unmovable items like a brick shed, a drain or septic tank, a fish pond and doorways et cetera. Then you ought to photocopy it, say five or ten times. This is so that you can make errors, change your mind or even allow everybody in the house to make their own plan from their own investigations and imagination.

If you think that this is outside your abilities, you are probably wrong. It really is not hard, children draw on graph paper all the time in maths lessons. Anyway, if you do not want to do it this way, then you will need to rely on ideas cut out of magazines.

Consequently, collect all your ideas from magazines and put them in a folder. Similarly, if you are making a diagram on paper, collect your ideas in a file, but also mark them on your graph paper.

Set yourself or your team a deadline of say, a two weeks or a month, but you do need to do the majority of your work in the spring or the summer, when the weather is warm. On the appointed day, get together and amalgamate all your plans into one.

Put all the redundant material aside and forget about it. Do not over complicate the matter by having all the designs in the active file. Now you are prepared to go to work and implement the ideas.

The option is now whether you do the work yourself or whether you get a contractor in. A contractor will have experience, and so will be able to get the job done quickly. They will also be able to provide practical suggestions, if what you want to accomplish is difficult. The other side of the coin is that it is a great deal more expensive.

If you choose to do it yourself, you may find it a good idea to split your plan into segments. It could be done in quarters of the garden at a time, if that is practicable, or you could do all the groundwork first, followed by the brick and blockwork, then the pond etc. Depending on your diagram. The only thing that really has to be done last is the planting of the flowers

How To Buy Garden Furniture On Line

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Purchasing garden furniture on line is not the perfect solution as it both solves and presents some difficulties if it is used indiscriminately. For example, if you find it difficult to get around the shops and garden centres, the Internet will permit you to visit hundreds of places to compare styles and prices, but you will not have had sight of your furniture and it might be costly to return it.

Therefore there are a few things to watch out for if you want to buy garden furniture on line. Some of these suggestions will apply to other items as well especially heavy items.

Be suspicious of shipping charges because some companies will strive to hide the fact that they can be horrific. If shipping fees are an extra, do not forget to add these fees on to the cost of the garden furniture before you compare prices. Some businesses will talk some drivel about an order processing fee in an attempt to cover up their delivery fees. These businesses are being dishonest and you should avoid them like the plague.

Try to switch off to the words ‘discount’ and ‘sale price’ until you have added up all the costs and you have compared this total with the total cost of a similar device. Likewise, be very wary of comparisons between list price and sale price. Manufacturers often ‘recommend’ a high list price purposely so that the retailer can offer a discount. It is very common practice, but designed to mislead.

Beware of ‘price snobbery’. If you see two retailers selling exactly the same items of garden furniture but at widely different prices, do not be automatically convinced that the cheaper one must be inferior. Instead, look around the cheap web site for extra costs. Do not forget that most retailers buy from the same manufacturers.

Do not trust any firm that says that they will not be beaten on price because they are the cheapest on the Internet or that they will undercut anyone you can prove is cheaper. They have no evidence that they are the cheapest and if you prove that they are not they will reduce their price only to you because you caught them in their lie. These people are cheats.

Firms that make a big issue out of quick service are not really giving you anything. Every company likes a fast turn-around because they can bank the check earlier and the warranty finishes sooner too. You will find out how decent their service is if you have difficulties. Empty promises and blowing one;s own trumpet mean nothing. Self praise is no praise.

You can check up on the firm’s customer service record by typing the company’s name, city of business and the word ‘complaints’ or ‘problems’ into Google. You will soon be able to judge for yourself whether you are dealing with a trustworthy company or not. Purchasing garden furniture on line is the same as buying anything else expensive on line: it is up to the buyer to beware before parting with his money because it may be difficult to get it back if there is a difficulty.

A Guide To Stop Being Scared When Driving

Friday, January 14th, 2011

Do you often feel a sense of panic and an uneasy feeling in the pit of your stomach when you’re driving? Feeling nervous when driving can be a very unnerving feeling; you can feel your heart racing, your palms getting sweaty plus on top of that you may feel a bit lightheaded or dizzy. These thoughts tend to be increased even further when you’re driving on the freeway because of high rates of speed and all the vehicles rushing by at high amounts of speed.

I was usually in a state of constant fright and scared on the freeway. I tend to drive on the slow side and I would get super anxious when all these other autos would glide past by me at really quick speeds. I virtually thought like they were trying to run me off the road. I would get knots in my stomach when I had to merge onto other freeways and navigate sharp turns and curves. I grew up driving in Orange County where the roads tend to be rather wide and I was in shock when I drove on the Los Angeles freeway system for the first time. The roads in L.A are much more curvier, narrower and harrowing overall.

It’s a good thing that I had to face my demons. Part of it had to do with the fact that I landed a job that was around 20 miles away and I had no choice but to confront my fear of driving head on. A lot of people think that you need to take dangerous drugs like anti-anxiety meds or indulge in pricey therapy to get rid of your driving phobia, but this isn’t the case at all. Your brain has simply associated the act of operating a motor vehicle with danger and disaster for some unknown reason . Thankfully, you can condition your brain to overcome these debilitating feelings.

Some things which will help is to inhale deeply when driving a car and to concentrate your gaze at the road ahead, not just at the short distance of space in front of you. Instead look ahead at the open road. Remind yourself that you have driven on the the road before without anything awful happening. If it helps, bring a pal along when you drive so at least you’ll have somebody there for moral support.

Being nervous when driving can be quite stressful and cause a lot of tension and distress.Hopefully these tips will help you overcome your phobia and result in you being feeling more at ease and relaxed the next time you go for a drive.

Which Are The Styles Of Garden Furniture

Sunday, January 9th, 2011

If you want to get some new garden furniture, the first thing to do is think about the styles of garden furniture that would go well with your garden and your requirements. If you already have an idea of what you want, you are already half way there, otherwise you will have to do some research on the different styles of garden furniture

This research can be done on line very easily by typing ‘garden furniture’ into Google, but if you would prefer more depth on the furniture, you could get a couple of magazines on gardening and landscaping. If you rather a more hands-on approach, you can go around the home improvement stores and the garden centres.

In fact, you will have to go to the shops sooner or later anyway unless you intend buying on line too. I personally like to do some exploration on the Internet first and then use the data that I gleaned from there to make informed decisions in the store. I do not really have confidence in the photographs. I want to see and touch the garden furniture and verify the joints and finish.

Once you get to the garden centre, you will come across different styles of garden furniture including: farmhouse or rustic, contemporary or modern, resort or poolside and these can be made from hardwood, softwood, plastic or metal.

Hardwood is by far the most popular material for garden furniture and most people prefer the farmhouse style, although there are some fantastic modern styles as well.

No matter which style you like the most or what it is manufactured of the number one best piece of advice is to get the best quality that you can afford. This is true of most items you can buy, but I think that it is particularly true of garden furniture because it has a very hard life. Just imagine it: snow, rain, heat; temperatures varying from -5c to + 35c and varying humidity.

Cheap plastic cannot erect with those circumstances. I used to buy cheap plastic and needed to replace it every eighteen months. Then I bought expensive plastic and I still have some of that but in essence it only lasted three years. I have seen metal garden furniture and it always rusts, even if it is plastic coated, enamelled or painted. Softwood lasts well, but it will rot after approximately five years even if it is quite well taken care of.

The only garden furniture that I have ever had or seen at friends’ houses that lasts and looks good all that time is hardwood. There is a broad selection of hardwoods. There are native hardwoods like oak, cherry, walnut, maple and beech and foreign hardwoods like mahogany and teak. These hardwoods can also be stained to practically any colour although most people prefer the natural look.

Hardwood garden furniture is easy to maintain as well: just rub it over with linseed oil once or twice a year. If you carry out this simple maintenance procedure the timber will not dry out and it will endure the elements for twenty years or more ensuring that you get maximum value for money from this, the finest of all the styles of garden furniture.

The Only Way To Stop Smoking Cigarettes

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Smoking cigarettes used to be a great deal more widespread than it is today. Now most smokers are searching for methods of stopping smoking. This is because smokers and the general public at large are more aware of the risks of smoking cigarettes nowadays.

Just look at films manufactured in the Sixties and before, everyone is smoking. It shows how common smoking was compared with today. This would not be possible now as you may not smoke in public places, on public transport, in restaurants or in bars any more in most Western countries and elsewhere too.

The problem with smoking is that not only the smoker suffers, so does everyone around about the smoker. This is known as passive smoking and it has an effect on those working or living with smokers – a barmaid or a spouse for example. So, all these individuals are endangering their health so that tobacco firms can become richer.

No matter how long someone has been smoking, it is possible to give up the habit. Anyone who has stopped smoking will tell you that stopping smoking cigarettes is all to do with the mind. You definitely have to desire to give up smoking or you will not do it successfully.

Individuals have different ways of stopping smoking cigarettes. Some say that nicotine patches or nicotine gum help, because you can wean yourself off nicotine slowly without having to inhale the poisonous smoke of cigarettes. Nicotine is highly addictive and most of the chemical withdrawal symptoms have to do with the shortage of nicotine in the body.

Most individuals find that the single effective way of stopping smoking cigarettes is to give up smoking dead – in one go. It is very difficult to cut down or to swap to a weaker brand. You are still inhaling poisonous smoke. It is still no good to you or anyone around you.

Cutting down or switching brands does not work, because you will still smoke other people’s and you will still be in a smokers’ environment. You will also find yourself smoking tomorrow’s five cigarettes today, swearing not to smoke any the next day. That never works. You have to give up smoking dead.

There are a number of situations that can provide the motivation to quit smoking cigarettes. Illness is usually high on the list. A few years ago two friends of mine who smoked heavily stopped smoking cigarettes within weeks of each other.

One was in his sixties and had smoked for almost sixty years: he was told that his lungs were beginning to go, but that if he stopped smoking, the shock might kill him. He stopped smoking one morning and is still alive, but what a dilemma!

The other was in his fifties and drove a lot as a travelling salesman. The doctor told him that he would probably have to have a leg removed next year, if he did not stop smoking and that the other might go a year or so after that. He stopped smoking instantly and still has both legs.

So it seems that the trick to stopping smoking cigarettes successfully is to find your motivation (do you want to live long enough to see the grandchildren married?) and bear that image in front of you at all times. Take nicotine substitutes if you have to and stay away from environments where individuals smoke more, like pubs.Join a sports club instead, something like tennis, table tennis, swimming or even chess.

Is Your Home Office Furniture Hindering Or Helping You?

Wednesday, January 5th, 2011

Do you work from home? Or do you surf the Internet or buy or sell on eBay? Do you send and receive email? Obviously you do, because you are reading this article. So let me ask you, how much attention do you pay to the equipment you use to perform these jobs?

You might make sure that you have the latest and fastest computer, you may make sure that you use the provider of the fastest broadband connection accessible in your area, but how much consideration do you pay to your computer table and chair?

If you do not pay attention to these particulars as well, you are surfing at top speed but you could be heading for a bad back and other physical complaints at break-neck speed too. If you work for a company, these details are checked for you, or should be and if your boss does not take care of your posture, then the company could be liable for compensation. If you do not have a supervisor and work from home, it only makes sense that you take care of these details yourself.

If you take part in any of the activities listed in the first paragraph, you certainly should be taking an active interest in ergonomics, which is the study of the proper way to sit and how to use the right equipment to help you to achieve the proper posture so that you do not subject your body to undue stress when you are working.

So, how do you go about acquiring the proper table or desk and the proper chair for you to do your work safely? Well, it is probably easiest to start with the chair. The correct chair for you will allow you to place your feet flat on the floor with your thighs parallel to the floor. You should be able to accomplish this position without balancing on the edge of your chair. If you require a foot stool to achieve this state, that is all right. The chair should have a back too. Some say there should be arm rests as well.

The table or desk should be of the height that will permit you to sit on your seat and put your elbows on the desk comfortably with a straight back. The height of the table should not encourage you to reach out or slump.

Once you know how high your table and chair need to be, you can take into account size. In general, the bigger the table or desk the better. However, you know what you are like. Are you the type of person who clears the desk at the end of every day, or are you the sort that works until you cannot work any more and likes to leave books and papers open for a quick start the next day?

If you are the latter type, then you require as large a desk as you can get, but you might just want a big desk because they are imposing. Whatever. It does not matter. A bigger desk is better anyway. The bigger the better, but it must be at the height that allows you to sit at it on a seat that suits the length of your calfs and the length of your abdomen.

Some Advice On Quitting Smoking

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

If you are a smoker, then the overwhelming odds are that you have tried to give up smoking, even if you never told anyone that you were trying to give up. The old joke among smokers is that they have given up giving up.

That is a real pity and a very sad joke. Most smokers began whilst they were young and impressionable, but it takes a great deal of willpower to give up for good.

If you are trying to quit smoking, then I hope that some of the tips set out below will be of use to you in your quest to kick the habit. The truth is that it takes most people years to really give up smoking, although there are lots of people who give up one day and never smoke again – ever.

It really depends on the sort of person you are really. Individuals can cut down gradually and others know that if they are going to stop, then they need to make a clean break once and for all.

It is simple to judge progress with the person who ceases from one day to the next, but a lot more difficult to do the same with someone who cuts down. For example, how long is someone going to take to reduce from one packet a day to two?

How does a partner know when someone is smoking ten cigarettes an evening, that they have not already smoked thirty during the day? It is very difficult.

In the end, the quitter is on his own and if he or she wants to tell lies concerning their progress, they can. No-one else will know, but at the end of the day, they are only telling lies and attempting to fool themselves that they are attempting to give up smoking. Having said that, a smoker must reward himself for each step of real progress.

A good tip is not to rely on just one strategy to give up. For instance, you could wear a patch and reduce your intake by five or ten real cigarettes every week. Try nicotine gum at the same time.

Always tell people that you are giving up and never accept a cigarette off anyone and never offer anyone one either. Do not get into ’rounds’ or ‘flashes’ of sharing cigarettes.

If you find that you smoke more while you are in a stressful situation, such as at the time to submit the end of year accounts, hold off trying to quit until after then. One of the times that most smokers have a big problem cutting down is when they are in the pub drinking alcohol with their friends. This is probably the hardest time to overcome the habit.

Many people like a cigarette with a drink after finishing work and if you fit into this category, endeavor to go home from work for a drink or give up smoking with a friend and take it in turns to go to their house and yours for a drink after work. Once the first three months are over, you could go back to the pub and see how you get on or you simply may not want to anymore.

Simple Ideas For All Kitchens

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Is your kitchen a dreary and uninteresting area to work in? It does not have to be like that, you can transform it quite easily either yourself or by getting in contractors to accomplish it for you. The trick is to know what you desire before you take a sledge hammer to your existing kitchen.

So, before you go about taking down what you already have, go about collecting ideas for replacement. You can get fantastic ideas from the home refurbishment TV programmes, from home design journals, by looking at friends’ kitchens and by reading my tips below.

Maybe the best place to start is to think about how to reflect your own personal style. This could be a broad trend like farmhouse, Tuscan, Mexican, modern, or it could be a little bit of many styles to make up your own. However, do not forget that there is plenty of scope to express your own individuality even if you choose a broad style.

One trap to avoid is attempting to get all the latest gadgets from a broad style. For instance, if you follow the modern broad trend to its logical end, your kitchen will look like a cold, clinical hotel or hospital kitchen full of stainless steel. If you like all that sort of equipment , then fine, but it is difficult for a family to feel at home in.

If money is tight, you could just repaint the cabinets a different colour and replace the handles. That will make a huge difference. Altering the ambient lighting is another pretty cheap way of varying the accent of your kitchen. Install subtle lighting under the wall units and if you already have those, try fixing some spot lights to the ceiling and if you already have those, try using some wall sconces for candles.

If you have beautiful pots and pans or want to get a set, why not show them off by fixing a rack to the wall from which to hang your pots and pans? it adds a very appealing effect to any kitchen.

You can also make a huge change to the kitchen (or any room for that matter) by altering the flooring. Solid wood is gorgeous, but if you cannot afford that, you could try veneered floor covering or stone, if the floor will take the weight. It is a good idea to endeavor to use the kitchen flooring to reinforce the broad image of your kitchen’s new style.

If you do not already have one, consider creating an outdoor kitchen for use whilst the weather allows. An outdoor kitchen certainly frees up a lot of room and ‘usage’. People flow to the outdoor kitchen whilst the weather is bright and your indoor living space suddenly seems less cluttered.

Last, but not least, the kitchen table. Just changing the style or shape of your kitchen table will have a big influence on the general look of your kitchen. Go from timber to glass or from square to round.

Buying Perfume For Yourself

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

Most people use fragrance of one kind or another, whether its purpose is to cover up possible body odour or just for fun. When I say ‘fun’, I mean ‘pleasure’ or to attract admirers, whether you intend to do anything about them or not. There are literally thousands of scents to choose from and they are priced from cheap to exorbitantly expensive. So, when there are so many choices, how do you know which ones are suitable for you?

There are a few rules of thumb that you can use as guiding principles to help you choose which scent is appropriate for you. Firstly, you will have to know a little about the basic varieties of scent on hand, before you can find out which brand of perfume will suit you the best.

So, you can begin by taking a look at the ingredients on the bottle. From these ingredients you can determine what type of fragrance is in the bottle. The basic types of scent are: light musk, natural fragrance, loud heady scent, floral scent, warm scent, bright cheerful scent and a few others.

You should get a small note book and make notes when you test perfumes in various department stores. Perhaps you will find musk too overwhelming for you or perhaps you do not want to smell like a garden flower. It is all very individual and personal. No one can say that you are right or wrong.

One’s body chemistry plays a huge role in why a scent will smell lovely on your friend, but not so well on you. It is just a fact, that you cannot go by what smells good on someone else.

Scents that are manufactured from natural substances such as flowers, herbs or spices and even fruit tend to smell warm and soft. Examples of this type or fragrance are gardenia and lily of the valley. Musk, however, may be made to produce a delicate bouquet that swirls softly around you, but it can be strong and heady too.

You may find that you like a perfume, but that it is just too overwhelming for you. If that is the case, you may be able to get it in Eau de Cologne or Toilet Water, which are weaker in dilution. Other than that, you could use less or dab it on the underneath of your clothing where it might not be subject to so much body heat and so will not evaporate quite so quickly.

If you go about choosing the right for yourself systematically, it could take quite some time to find something that is ‘Essence De You’, but it is well worth it. What is a year, when you can wear the perfume for forty years? This is why I suggested getting a little note pad to put in your bag before doing the rounds of the free trial counters in the department stores.

The salesgirls won’t mind, they will be pleased to show off their knowledge and be delighted that someone is taking a real interest in their merchandise. Then, once you have one, you could start all over again, if you enjoyed finding the first , but next time you will have a notebook full of suggestions.

Giving A Healthy Gift Basket

Friday, December 10th, 2010

These days, everyone is very aware of the benefits of eating properly and the consequences of excess. This is one of the reasons why a healthy gift basket is a fantastic idea for a present. Going ‘healthy’ does not mean that the gift basket cannot be fun, personal and beautiful. If your loved one likes nuts, then buy nuts, but unsalted ones in their shells. You see? It only takes a little lateral thinking.

Children may seem difficult to please on the topic of healthy gift baskets, because children love candy and sugar, but there are many healthy snacks, which have a little less sugar. For instance, jam-filled biscuits contain sugar, but they also contain fruit. The same goes for oatmeal raisin cookies.

Toss in a few energy bars from the health food shop made from grains, fruit, honey, raisins and nuts and you may not have cut down on the calories, but you have increased the goodness of the foodstuff. An unusual fruit from the Indian Supermarket, like a passion fruit, a star fruit or a papaya might go down well too and impart extra vitamins.

If you are looking at giving a healthy gift basket to a teenager, you may do well to keep in mind that teens worry about their appearance. The get spots and spots. So you could prepare a healthy gift basket which included fresh fruit, pimple cream and skin cleanser with rose-scented bath bags for girls, and shaving kits for boys (or vice versa).

If you are giving a healthy gift basket to an elderly person, then bear in mind that many older people often put up with dietary problems and aches and pains, so the older you get, the more you value healthy treats. Gourmet chocolate, fine quality drinking chocolate, bath salts and peppermints would surely be cherished. Single leaf tea is also an idea, say, Lapsong Suchong.

If you are thinking about giving a healthy gift basket to your parents, why not? Mum may well appreciate a variety of anti-wrinkle skin creams, cocoa butter or glycerin soap and bath salts. Many shops stock oils beneficial to mature skin. Gourmet chocolate will also be appreciated as will rarer nuts and fruits. Rose water is a good addition too.

And Dad? Well, you know him best. Is he athletic and health orientated or is he into work and relaxation? Does he take pleasure in fishing or golf? Does he enjoy bar-b-queing? Does he enjoy expensive, single malt whisky – the non-guzzling kind? Does he like the occasional beer? If so, you could get him a few foreign beers that he has never tried before. Chocolate liqueurs are usually a firm favourite as well. Stem ginger is a popular luxury with those men who are aware of its existence.

Perhaps a few magazines on his favourite subject (no, not Penthouse) or a couple of tickets to a game. A joint basket for Mum and Dad is probably easier and then you can send them to the theatre or/and a restaurant too. A healthy one, of course.
