Do I Need A Wireless Home Security System?

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Nowadays a house or even an apartment is not thought of as complete without an adequate home security systems Not having one often has an effect on the market price of the property too – downwards if your home security system is found wanting or even non existent. People are just too worried about the rising levels of crime. One of the problems for home owners is that stores and other businesses have got their act together and are very well protected in general. This has forced the average burglar too turn his attention to houses.

The number of burglaries has increased by almost 10% over the last five years because of this fact so now every household should be considering upgrading, replacing or fitting a new home security system. It is a shame that the situation has come to this, but it is so. I myself was attacked in my home by burglars ten years ago. They tied me up and threatened me with a knife. They also threatened to skin my dog in front of me. It was not nice.

Modern technology makes it easy to fit a very good home security system, without having to spend a great deal of money. Often when you have work done on your home or your car, the labour element of the cost is more than that of the parts you wanted. It can be the same with the setting up of a home security system. However, a wireless home security system can be fitted by any reasonably capable person, which allows you to save money or just get a better system.

If you can run a wire from a fuse box and climb a ladder you can fit a home security system yourself. With older wired systems, it was tricky to hide the wires that ran to the sensors. You had to insert them behind coving and skirting boards an chase them into the plaster. It is a lot of work to do it correctly, but it is simpler with a wireless system.

If you go wireless, the only thing you will have to do or have done is wire the central control box directly to the fuse box and wire up the external siren too. After that you can just fix the proper sensors in the proper places and you are finished. All of this is explained in the instructions, which I suggest you scan while you are in the store in case they are in badly translated Chinese.

You can take the basic home security system as far as you like. Modern wireless technology permits many extras and varieties. A basic system would consist of the control box, the external siren and all the sensors, but you should add outside security lights to this as a necessity. They can be wirelessly linked to the control box too.

Then you could add surveillance cameras and a speaker-phone on the front door. All of these things can relay information to your control box and from there to a PC, if wanted. The Internet can be used as an interface to control your system as well, if you want – even from work or while on holiday!

A wireless home security system is a very adaptable piece of equipment, but is not that complicated to install, go to the mall as soon as you have time to get some leaflets.

Ecological Garden Deck Furniture

Friday, November 5th, 2010

If you have a nice garden, then you probably have a patio of a deck so that you can get every last scrap of enjoyment out of it. Most patio furniture is left outside for a lot of the year so it is best to get high quality garden deck furniture. High quality garden deck furniture is essential if you expect it to withstand the rigours of all kinds of weather and yet last a reasonable length of time too.

Another factor, particularly these days, is the ecology. People want to have as little impact on the ecology as possible, thereby reducing their carbon footprint, as they say. The manufacture of plastic involves polluting the atmosphere with more CFC’s and disposal can cause problems too. Plastic can take decades and decades to bio-degrade.

Metal patio garden furniture also has its problems. It has to be mined and fabricated and people are starting to worry about robbing Mother Earth of her minerals, but at least old metal can be recycled. That leaves us with timber and in particular hardwood. Previously, there was a great deal of alarm in almost every country about logging, but a lot of countries have the problem under control now after sustained pressure from the West.

Most people understand these days how important it is to look after our planet. There is even a special day to help people remember the Earth’s dire state called ‘Earth Day’. Using hardwood from replenishable sources is the best way to maintain our forests.

Garden furniture made from hardwood from a guaranteed sustainable source is the most ecological way out. If you maintain your hardwood furniture according to the manufacturer’s recommendations for the type of wood you have, it will last for a decade or more. Far longer than any plastic or metal furniture, which you might well have to replace every two years or so.

Acacia hardwood offers a hard wearing and comfortable alternative to teak. In fact, this type of wood is much like teak, as if you leave it untreated it will transform to a silvery grey color. However, it is best to treat all hardwood once or twice a year with suitable oil in order to maintain the warm tones of the wood.

Most people will have a garden patio furniture set of up-right chairs, loungers and a table or two or a nest of small tables. However, there are a few other sticks of furniture that will help you get more enjoyment from your garden. It is nice to be able to sit in the garden after it gets dark or when it is a bit nippy too. This can be achieved easily with a few accessories.

I suggest a patio heater, an electric mosquito killer and suitable lighting. Patio heaters are not dear any longer and a single upright propane heater will keep up to eight people warm, depending on their seating pattern. An electric mosquito killer will usually keep a whole garden clear. In fact, some will keep a quarter of an acre or more clear of flying insects. These two items may provide enough light for you, but is best to have a few spots to highlight a plant in bloom or to read by.

Owen Jones, the author of this article, writes on many topics, but is currently involved with commercial patio heaters. If you are interested in patio heaters too, please click through to Residential Patio Heaters.

Do You Have Security Problems In Your Home Or Business?

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Security is an essential facet of life, but then it always has been. It is normal for parents to do their best to take care of their families and it is normal and even a legal requirement for an employer to guarantee the safety of his or her employees. Part of the way we carry out these tasks is to secure the environment in which we live and work – our homes and our offices or other places of work.

A good security system for our homes and businesses is often an electronic system. Windows and doors – ie likely entry points – will be monitored by sensors. In order to preserve an effective security system, it is necessary to use a frequently changed password system. In a home the keypad will usually be numeric only, but you should change the password at least every month and possibly even every week.

For example, if you have teenage children or older, they will be bringing friends back. These friends will be able to see you child entering the password. This can be even more serious if the person is a boyfriend or girlfriend who subsequently gets dumped.

Similarly in an office or other place of work, it is a good idea to have pass cards that can be canceled if the employee leaves the company. A lot of damage is caused every year to material goods by disgruntled ex-employees and old boy- and girlfriends.

You can help passers-by and police by leaving some light on inside your building. Frequent passers-by, neighbours and police will get accustomed to seeing lights on, so if a burglar switches them off, they will become suspicious.

Burglars do not like light. Similarly, do not let bushes, shrubs or trees hide possible entry points. Keep them cut back so that people can see any doubtful activity. You would be astonished how many people just sit in their windows all day watching.

Outdoor security lighting is an excellent way of deterring intruders at night. Install a few solar garden lights that are activated by passive infra red motion sensors and they will be inexpensive to run. The good thing about them is that they do not announce their presence to the would be intruder, but they will catch him or her in a floodlight when he enters your property.

Another tip is to nail carpet gripper just under the top edge on the inside of your garden fence. Anyone trying to haul himself up over your fence will have a very horrible shock and leave DNA for the police.

If your business or home has an open door policy in order to allow clients or your kids to walk in, install doorbells or chimes that are triggered by under carpet sensors, door sensors or PIR’s, so that employees or family can not be caught by surprise. It is very useful, because if your busy secretary doubles as a greeter of walk-in clients, it will ensure that she does not miss anybody or keeps anybody waiting.

Home Security Matters

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Home security is a mammoth issue, but this is nothing new – it always has been an issue for parents and home owners. The problem is that family structure has changed. Not so long ago, people had much bigger families and mothers or grandmothers stayed at home to look after the kids. With six, eight or even ten children in a family, the house was never empty so burglars did not have a lot of opportunity. There was more social cohesion too, so criminals were reluctant to steal from their neighbours. So they attacked shops instead.

However, shops and other businesses started using electronic burglar alarms as the prices fell. These security units were so effective that burglars turned to stealing from people’s homes, which is made easier by the fact that the kids are in school and the parents are at work all day. American federal statistics indicate that domestic burglaries are up nearly ten percent since 2004. So, what can you do to put off a burglar?

If your home is left empty for a large part of the day because your offspring are at school, nursery or a baby-sitters’ and you are at work, think about getting some home help or joining a neighbourhood watch scheme. If you had a cleaner coming and going, it would afford some activity to deter crooks.

Becoming a member of a neighbourhood watch would convey to your neighbours that you are worried about security and they will keep an eye on your home when you are out. Get your self a dog too, although be aware that they can be easily poisoned, if the robber has access to them..

Install an electronic surveillance system. This could be a monitored or tape system. Monitored is the best. An added bonus to a surveillance system is that you can be sure what your baby sitter gets up to while you are out too. You can turn it off when you yourself are at home or just leave the external cameras on.

Another additional benefit with a home security system is that you can get a panic button linked to the system’s main external siren and strobe light. If you are attacked or worried, you can trigger the alarm by pushing a button on a device that you can wear around your neck. They can also be built into watches and brooches. These personal panic buttons are a good idea for the elderly and single women offering peace of mind to those living alone.

A monitored surveillance system will also warn you if your house catches fire while you are asleep or out or if someone is prowling around your backyard. Often the operator of the system will phone the emergency services as well after they have alerted you.

A good surveillance system can be used as a bargaining chip with your insurance broker to gain some hefty discounts on your premium. If you have a small business that you run from home, you may be able to off-set some or all of the overheads against your business too and a good home surveillance system can boost the selling price of your house, because it makes it that one step more complete, like having uPVC doors and windows and a wooden deck.

Facts About Chocolate’s Origins

Friday, November 5th, 2010

The Theobroma Cacao or ‘the food of the Gods’ is what we all know as the cocoa tree. It’s origins can be traced back to South America’s rain forests, particularly to Central America, although historians are still at variance over certain facts surrounding this tree.

It is suggested that the Mayans first grew the cacao tree in 300 AD, although others point to inadequate evidence that it was grown or at least harvested in around 3,000 BC. The Aztecs also used the cacao, but from about 1100 AD.

The chocolate (drink) that we all know today was called ‘xocoatl’. It was a very special beverage that was made out of cacao, chilies, anise seed, vanilla, corn meal and some other spices. It is said that only royalty were permitted to drink it and then only from golden chalices, which were to be used for the purpose only once.

The cacao tree is very sensitive to its environment and it most frequently grows in the shade of the rain forest canopy. If only for this reason alone, chocolate lovers should join forces with the environmentalists to save the rain forests so that the cacaos will continue to exist.

This tree is unusual because its fruits grow directly on its branches and trunk; midges cause the pollination of the flowers during the night time.

The cacao tree is very prolific, but not very fruitful. It can have approximately 10,000 blossoms, but only about 10 to 50 of those will mature into fruits or pods. This is thought to be because the cacao tree can regulate the number of blossoms that will mature according to its ability to handle the energy loss of bearing fruit or pods.

The cacao tree regulates itself in this way to preserve its health. Too many pods might exhaust its energy so much that it could not survive a viral or insect attack or too many ripe pods might snap off its branches.

The cocoa beans grow within the pod, the fruit of the blossom. Harvesters wait for the pod to ripen. They will then crack open the pods and take out the seeds, which are surrounded by a white pulp. This is thrown away these days, but it is thought that many years ago it was fermented into an alcoholic drink for ceremonial purposes. The beans are the source of chocolate, although there is lots to do yet..

The seeds are very bitter at this point and it is for this reason that they will go through a process of fermentation for between three and seven days. This causes the seeds to go through chemical as well as physical changes. The result of this was used for the royal drink, the ‘xocoatl’.

However, to turn it into what we recognize as chocolate, the fermented beans need to go through several more procedures. Processes by the name of: drying, cleaning, roasting, grading, opening, separation, grinding and liquefying.

After liquefying, you have pure chocolate in the form of chocolate liquor. This is sold to chocolate producers and the good ones make high-class chocolate from it and the bad ones adulterate it so much that it is scarcely chocolate any more.

Choose Your Wedding Ring Carefully

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

There is a very large number of wedding rings available in the shops these days. In fact, you have the world of wedding rings to choose from. The high street shops in a large town have a very good selection, but the Internet lays the best jewellers and the best styles out for your inspection.

So, it is very important that you take your time when selecting one. Maybe the enormous range of wedding rings makes that more difficult not easier. Diamond wedding rings have been the most popular since ordinary working people could afford them, before that a plain band of gold had to suffice, for people who could afford that much.

Nowadays, Western people have become more daring and they are selecting other stones like the strikingly beautiful blue sapphire. Some even choosing not to have a stone at all, going back to tradition, so to speak. However, there are plenty of examples of not so simple bands of gold too.

There is the Irish Claddagh ring with its characteristic two hands holding a crowned heart symbolizing love, friendship and loyalty; and there is the Celtic Knot with its intricately interwoven strands twisting and turning without end, standing for eternity and eternal love despite the twists and turns and difficulties of daily life.

So, selecting a wedding ring is not just a question of picking a beautiful wedding ring, you should be choosing one that says what you want it to say. You could look up on the Internet what the different metals and various stones indicate traditionally. If you cannot find a ring that says what you want, consider having one made. It is not as expensive as you might think.

Tradition is a good thing when it comes to wedding rings. After all, you want your ring to express your eternal love and devotion for the person you are giving it to and your marriage could last fifty or sixty years, especially with people living longer these days. Hopefully, you will wear this ring for the rest of your life, so select a style that seems timeless to you.

Picking a wedding ring is not as straightforward as it looks, because you are going to be wearing your ring every day for the rest of your life, so it should be something that you will not get tired of in a couple years. You should look at and try on many rings in order to get one that feels comfortable. You will want a ring that does not look out of date in ten years time. The simplest method of doing that is to go for a traditional style, because those styles have already stood the test of time.

One last piece of advice is to ask the jeweller to attest to the total carat weight of the stones in the ring and the weight of each individual stone and the quality and weight of the metal (although it should be hallmarked) on paper, then if it gets lost or stolen you have something to show the insurance company.

Romantic Cruises In Paris

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

If you are feeling romantic and you want to be alone with your loved one in a romantic place far from humdrum distractions, why not go to Paris and take a cruise? The cruise ships are gorgeous and offer haute cuisine with fine wines and a wide range of dishes. Service on board is superb and if they know that it is a special trip for you, they will go out of their way to make it even more special.

Just by selecting the city of Paris as your venue, you will be conveying the impression of romance, because as everybody knows, Paris has the reputation of being the capital of the world of romance.

So, how do you go about booking one of these cruises? Well, clearly, first of all, you have to be in Paris. This is not a difficulty, if you live in Europe as there are flights and sleeper trains. If you are American, you will have to take the longer-term view and start saving for next year.

Once in your hotel in Paris, you can either ask reception for details or go to one of the many Tourist Information Centres, where everyone speaks English. The cruise line staff will pick you up from your hotel on the chosen day, so that you will not have the aggravation of having to find your way through a strange, busy city alone.

Once on board, the pampering starts with your welcoming on board and a complimentary drink to ignite the fires of romance. You will enjoy four or more hours of this, depending on which cruise you decide on, but they are all wonderfully romantic voyages aboard beautiful cruise liners.

Generally speaking, the cruise will begin on the left bank of the river Seine, usually in the vicinity of the Eiffel Tower. Some of these boats are made of a type of plastic glass, so that your view of the streets and monuments is unimpeded. And of course, all the sights are lit up at night and in quite a spectacular manner too. You will also be able to see downwards into the water itself.

As you cruise on this glass boat you will be entertained by some of the finest musicians that Paris can offer you. Solo instrumentalists; quartets; classical music; solo artiste singers or a duet. There are also cruises with more modern music as well, but I don’t find them as romantic as the more traditional stuff. However, you can take all these details into account when you book your romantic cruise in Paris.

You will not only pass by celebrated landmarks, you will also pass very close by them and even underneath them. Famous bridges; Notre Dame; the Louvre, and many more. Not only that, but you will see all these fantastic historical monuments while being pampered by the best hosts that Paris has to offer and drinking fine wines and champagne, seated at the bow of the cruiser in luxury.

Once your romantic cruise and your meal are over, you will be taken to a lavish show on the Champs Elysees, where you will be given a half bottle of champagne on entry. There is no need to worry about driving, so let your hair down and enjoy yourselves.

When you have had enough of the high life, you will be taken back to your hotel, in the same manner that you were picked up. However, there are other options too. You may want to go back to the hotel on a romantic horse and carriage, it will sustain that romantic mood.

Once you get back to your hotel, why not both get in the bath together? Light a few scented candles, open another bottle of wine and play some soft music. It will be an evening you will both remember for the rest of your lives, I promise you.

Xbox And Home Theater

Monday, November 1st, 2010

There are a number of video game systems on the market, but if you are looking for a game console that also can be used for home theater entertainment, then the best choice has to be the Xbox game console. Very often, it is the case that children will want to play games in the daytime on holidays and before bed during the week, whereas parents will want to watch films at night before retiring to bed. Therefore, the two age groups need not clash often with their use of the home theater system.

Therefore, if you can get a device that fulfills both the roles of playing games and playing films, you can save some money. The Xbox game console fits this role, because the Xbox is one of the new generation of video game boxes that can also play films on DVD or whatever disk format.

The Xbox is actually a very hi-tech piece of equipment, something that non-game players might not have realized. It meshes easily into a home theater system because it has wide screen video capability, HDTV screen resolutions and Dolby Digital and DTS sound support, making it a perfect home theater set-up component.

The Xbox is also a good looking piece of equipment, which will match any existing black home theater equipment you may already have. It does not look like just a plastic toy. It was invented by Microsoft and has a powerful, stylish look. The Xbox’s case is black with an X on it and a green Xbox logo resembling a jewel.

The Xbox is basically a cut-down computer as it has many parts of a personal computer such as an Intel processor, NVidia graphic chips and an internal hard drive among others. PC’s are general purpose tools, whereas the Xbox is designed for playing DVD’s in more ways than one. In other words, it is a dedicated computer. It is dedicated to the task of playing DVD’s and it does it very well.

However, it also has four controller sockets in the front of the box for connections and it has an Ethernet socket for multi player games that allows other gamers on the Internet to take part in the game. The Xbox system includes as standard: the controllers with a 9 ft cable, a standard AV cable, and an AC power cord. It also comes with a DVD loading tray and a multi signal audio-video connector for easy connection to televisions and other home theater systems.

The Xbox will transform the way you think about games and how you play them, because it is so committed to making interactive games a reality and as exciting as possible. Games are written especially for it such as the Dead or Alive series and the Halo series too.

However, their are sports games to be had too such as football and Formula 1 motor car racing. The graphics, sound and overall reality are remarkable. Finally, for parents who are worried about what their kids are watching, playing or doing, there are parental controls built into the Xbox.

Owen Jones, the writer of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with Home Theater Screens. If you are interested in a Home Movie Theatre, please click through to our site.

How To Buy Or Make Cushions For Garden Furniture

Monday, November 1st, 2010

People who have garden furniture prefer to spend as much of the summer sitting in their garden as they can. For these people, the summer months are too short and so they spend every spare moment of sunny weather enjoying the flowers in their garden and the good weather.

Some people eat in the garden too and it is also widespread practice to read the paper in the morning over a cup of coffee and a book or magazine in the evening with a drink on the patio too. Depending on the sort of furniture that you have, this can be pretty tiring for the posterior, so it is a decent idea to get a couple cushions to make your life easier.

If you do not have any garden furniture yet, you have the choice of plastic, metal or wood. Plastic garden furniture is inexpensive to buy, but it does not last a long time. Plastic will often only last for two or three years after which time it goes brittle and breaks due to extremes of hot and cold.

Metal furniture looks better than plastic and can be more comfortable to sit on because it frequently has a fabric seat, but it can be a bit rickety and it looks so stark. I think that metal garden furniture should be avoided. Once it begins rusting, it looks awful as well.

There are two kinds of wood garden furniture: softwood and hardwood. Some softwood chairs, such as the deck chair or beach chair have a fairly comfortable fabric chair, but most softwood and hardwood garden chairs are hard on the backside after a short while. It is for these seats in particular that you will need cushions.

If you are buying a new garden table and chair set, you might find that it comes with matching cushions otherwise you will have to buy or make your own. This is not a problem, but there are a couple of things to bear in mind.

The cushions are likely to get caught in the rain sometimes, so it is best to have them manufactured from materials that will not rot and will not hold water. The stuffing can be that non-absorbent fibre that you frequently find in cheap cushions. It is ideal for use in the garden. The covers should be removable and washable. Cotton or man-made fibre is all right here, because you can put them through the washing machine.

Waterproof material is not recommended because if water does get inside, you want it to be able to get out, not remain stuck inside where it will turn stale. If you want to dry them in a tumble dryer, be wary about using some man-made materials that may melt. You also do not want to use a fabric that might shrink as you will be washing them frequently. The colours must be fast for this reason as well.

While we are on colours, the colour or patterns of the cushion covers should be appropriate to the colours around them. Please, give this a little consideration: it makes all the difference between great, average and awful cushion covers, but it is where you can express your personal taste.

Exterior Security Lighting For Your Home Or Business

Friday, October 29th, 2010

It is entirely natural that we all want to keep our homes and businesses safe and well protected, but there are many ways in which this can be accomplished. The cheapest and most cost effective way is exterior security lighting

It really is a no brainer, bad lighting can make a home or business a much more attractive target than the house next door because it has less satisfactory exterior security lighting. Prowlers look for poorly lit points of entry into premises that appear to contain wealth, so when you are designing the security system for your home or business you should try to think like a thief.

Look at your buildings from the outside, or look at someone else’s first and ask yourself, how you would get in there if you had to. Pretend that you forgot your keys or that there is a crucial problem in your office. How would you get in? This is where the criminal gets in and you must learn how to block his every move.

Ten years ago, I lived in a bungalow on my own with my small, knee-high dog and armed robbers attacked me in my home, in spite of the fact that I had a decent home security system. Do not let it happen to you. My blunder was that I had insufficient exterior security lighting.

They had cut my phone line during the day and because I used a mobile phone for most of my calls, I did not realize. Also my dog was sick, but I did not appreciate that she had been poisoned too. At eleven o’clock at night there was a knock on the front door and I opened it, thinking that it was a neighbour in trouble.

A man charged in and over-powered me and the rest was not pleasant. However, the whole regrettable issue could have been prevented, if I had thought like them..

I was in the routine of pulling the curtains when I got home, so I did not notice that they had taken the bulbs from my exterior security lighting as well.

My advice is to check your exterior security lighting every night when you get home and keep the bushes or shrubs cut low around your front and back doors. Make sure that your exterior security lighting is working every evening and make sure that you can see who is ringing your door bell.

Provide your garden and your doors with plenty of light. Let them be on motion sensors and check who is at your door from a side window that looks out onto the front door. I had a beautiful frosted glass pane in my front door, but that is no good. I could not identify anyone through it.

Have a panic button fitted by your doors, a big one, so that if you are surprised you can swipe out and still hit it and above all make your next door neighbours aware that if your external siren sounds, that you are in trouble and that you need assistance immediately. If you are not in trouble, you can always say sorry later.
