As I said before, I had a good system in place, but I had turned it off as soon as I got home and opened the front door to my burglars. My suggestion is to get a wired or wireless home security system and, if you can afford it, get a monitored home security system with at least one surveillance camera, but preferably one on each external wall and one inside in the lobby.

Obtain contact sensors for all external doors and vibration sensors for all windows. Put a personal panic button by all external doors and have garden lights that are switched on by motion or body heat outside. Keep your system activated and be very suspicious of who you open the door to.

I’m In Love With A Mule

I am reminded why living in California is so desirable now that the rainy, cold days of winter have been replaced by the balmy temperatures of spring . Vibrant green grass and patches of wildflowers cloak the hillsides. Our wide open beaches are still too chilly for water sport seeking tourists and belong to the locals. The peachy-pink sunsets and velvet blue night skies blend into our majestic mountains in the distance.. It surely is heaven on earth.

With all this beauty just outside our door, my husband, kids and I have begun taking on more outdoor activities. We have enjoyed spur-of-the-moment picnics in meadows beside Ortega Highway and day trips to the San Bernardino mountains to engage in snowball fights. We have spent evenings at the beach roasting marshmallows after fatiguing days spent peddling our beach cruisers back and forth on the boardwalk between the Huntington, Newport and Balboa Piers, Yes, life is good.

We pack an collection of supplies for each of these little journeys. No trip is complete without lip balm, snacks, drinks, cold water, Frisbees, a playing cards, blankets and beach towels.

My most favorite of all these little necessitites is the Ice Mule. My husband found our Mule at a hunting/fishing retailer (which is funny because he would never hurt a fly). Thinking it was something we could use one day, he brought it home. He was right.

We rarely leave home without it, our snacks and drinks stay cold for hours and hours.. A short time ago I realized that the Ice Mule had been left in our SUV overnight. Then I recalled that we had packed deviled eggs for our trip the day before. I anticipated being consumed with lethal fumes as I extracted the eggs from their Tupperware tomb. astonishingly when I opened the bag to discover that everything inside was still cold to the touch! Twenty four hours later the Ice Mule was still working hard.

Now I take the Ice Mule with me when I do grocery shopping. I transfer the cold items into my Mule and go on with my errands around town before returning home. I truly adore this thing!

It won’t be long now till the beaches become jam-packed, noisy meccas for the tourist traffic and the blossoming green countryside will turn a drab shade of brown. . Traffic on Pacific Coast Highway will be reduced to a slow crawl due to tourists looking for the closest spot to the beach (hint, these don’t exist in the summer).

You can bet that our Mule will be with us to keep our beverages, munchies, sun tan lotion and temperaments cool when we do feel brave enough fight the summer crowds. Yes, it will soon be time to relax by the pool with our soda pop, ice tea and lemonade as the temperature climbs past 90 degrees. Allthough the kitchen will be only be a few feet away I am planning on using the Ice Mule poolside. In fact I might not leave my lounge chair all summer long.
